Azeem Boomberg (20) has built up a strong reputation in motorsport in South Africa.
He is a member of the Domingo family who were part of an era of motor racing history in this country dating from 1967 to 1984. Team Domingo Racing, the pioneers of non-white participants in professional sports in the "Old South Africa", headed by the late Mr. Solly Domingo (Azeem's Great-Grandfather) had successfully participated in local motor sport in the form of Class C saloon cars, Formula Vee, Formula Ford, Formula 5000 and Formula 1 where names such as Mike, Joe and Tony Domingo featured. Azeem's interest in motorsport was sparked off by talks with family members about drivers such as Ian Scheckter, Eddie Keizan, Roy Klomfass, Bobby Scott, Trevor Van Rooyen, Basil Van Rooyen, Graham Duxbury as well as their involvement with many of the great Formula 1 teams and drivers at the time. "This sparked off my excitement and interest in motor sport", Azeem says. As the passion grew it directed him to karting , as he also says, "I once read that the late Ayrton Senna was quoted as saying", “Karting is the purest form of racing”.
He was soon noticed by Castrol/Toyota for his Karting ability. A sponsorship deal followed shortly and Azeem welcomed the challenge to compete against some of the best in the 2003 Junior MAX 125 class. In 2004 he again was noticed by Mail & Guardian and another successful sponsorship deal emerged.
His potential was also spotted by Mr. Peter Lanz of Targa Motors and Peter Lanz Motorsport. A man who has vast knowledge and experience in many forms of motorsport and who currently runs a section of the Sports 2000 Development Programme that contests at Kyalami and other National Circuits under the Vodacom Power Tour organizers. After a quick 2 hour training session in this car, Peter Lanz informed him that he should race at Killarney in Cape Town. He ran 6th quickest there. In only his second race in this car at Kyalami he finished fourth overall.
